HEBREW EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY
H.E.S. reminds me of all the disparate organizations that supported me as a youth growing up in Manhattan and Queens; from the Boys’ Club to the local YMCA. After school and during the summer months there was always a community center creating opportunities that influence a lifetime. For me, this quote from their web site rings true:
”H.E.S. provides crucial educational, social and recreational programs to everyone in Southeast Brooklyn. H.E.S. services range the life span, from childcare and Universal Pre-K programs to a senior center providing meals to the elderly. H.E.S. serves the most vulnerable including new immigrants, single-working parents, at-risk youth and the physically and developmentally disabled. Our participants include African-Americans, Caribbean-Americans, Asians, elderly Jews, Israelis, Italians and émigrés from the former Soviet Union.”
And they also provide three excellent handball courts well stocked with players throughout the year. The fact is they host numerous tournaments sponsored by the USHA and the ICHA. As you can see from the pictures below (most from the 2007 and 2008 winter tournament) this is a very active community center for handball players. 2006 USHA National One-Wall Championships held at the H.E.S. center. “This was the hardest one yet,” Satish Jagnandan said after defeating Cesar Sala for his third consecutive singles title. It was an emotional day as play moved indoors for the finals and Satish was overcome with emotions after the 11-0 tiebreaker.
